Adjusting ISO

ISO is an important aspect of photography and understanding it will give you more control over how your images are created.

ISO is the measure of your camera’s sensitivity to light, and it allows you to control the amount of light needed for a good exposure. ISO is determined by a range of values, with the lower values such as ISO 100 being less sensitive to light, and the higher values, such as ISO 6400 being more sensitive to light.

Adjusting the ISO value changes the way light is received by the camera. This small adjustment can mean the difference between an ordinary shot and an extraordinary one.

Using a higher ISO allows more light to access your camera’s sensor, therefore increasing your camera’s ability to capture images in low light without using a flash. Take advantage of this feature by using a higher ISO with a fast shutter speed to capture images in low light with reduced image blur.

While increasing ISO can be used to help freeze motion in low light, it can also result in increased noise and grain in our images. It is best to keep your ISO value as low as possible to achieve better image results.

Similar to adjusting shutter and aperture, there is no ‘one size fits all’. Experiment with different settings to find out how ISO can help with creating your images.

Photographing the Night Sky: Pinpoints of Light

There are a variety of techniques that can be used to create dynamic photographs of the night sky, including capturing the stars as pinpoints of light, as star trails and by creating time-lapse movies of the stars as they move across the sky during the course of an evening.
